For my darling
Little Mister
on your 6th birthday!

This poem is a springboard from Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem, A Good Boy.  We’ve enjoyed all of Stevenson’s poems this year in his book, “A Child’s Garden of Verses.”

I woke before the morning light,
I was happy all the day,
I never said an unkind word,
but smiled and welcomed all to play.

I love life and all of its wonders,
my world is a fascinating place.
Every day is a new adventure,
every moment a thrilling race.

That “speed-bump” to another is my Everest,
with Mommy I explore, discover and create.
Armed with legos and sticks, or a big pile of bricks
I’m a trailblazer-, engineer-innate.

I wish my home was a tree house
filled with friends, two-legged and four,
or six or eight, I’d be happy
and just wish for all the more.

For I’m a tender-hearted laddie,
like a “SNORT!” ushering its chickies come near,
I’ll worry till all are safe.
My loved ones I hold very dear.

But I know I can battle like a Knight,
like a Ninja or a Basketball Star.
My courage is my weapon
that takes me to new lands near and far.

I go and I watch and I listen,
facts and lessons I wholly imbibe,
I push myself to learn and master,
once a Scribbler, now I’m a Scribe.

Now you know I have my moments,
like a soggy dog out in the rain.
And I need to get sad or even a bit mad,
then shake it off and find my happy again.

So worry not my dear reader,
I’ll always return to a smile,
my Sis may be Queen of the castle,
but I’m the Joker of our family card pile.

And now at last I see the sun
is going down behind the wood,
and I am very happy,
for I know that I’ve been good.

My bed is waiting cool and fresh,
with Puppy and Blankie lying there,
And I must be off to sleepsin-by,
and not forget my prayer.

I know that, till to-morrow
I shall see the sun arise,
no scary dream shall fright my mind,
that Daddy can’t vaporize.

But slumber hold me tightly
till I waken in the dawn,
and hear the birds a-singing
for me a merry birthday song.
