The Little Miss is ELEVEN!

ELEVEN years ago this darling baby girl made her grand appearance, and the world has never been the same.

It is a brighter, more joyous place because she is in it.

Nae shoon to hide her tiny taes,
Nae stockin’ on her feet;
Her supple ankles white as snaw,
Or early blossoms sweet.

Her simple dress o’ sprinkled pink,
Her double, dimplit chin,
Her puckered lips an’ baumy mou’,
With na ane tooth within.

Her een sae like her mither’s een,
Twa gentle, liquid things;
Her face is like an angel’s face,
We ’re glad she has nae wings.

~ Jeremiah Eames Rankin, “The Baby”

Little Miss!
Belly Boo!
Annabelle Jane!

Happy Birthday!

You are ELEVEN!!!

And what a beautiful girl you are,
inside and out.

A sparkly gem.  An immeasurable treasure.

My Mama heart can’t really handle how much you’ve grown…7 inches in the last 2 years!  As you chasse’ ever closer to your teen years (eek!), you are discovering more and more the exceptional young woman that God made you to be.

What delight the Lord must have felt when He tenderly crafted the brilliant, creative, sensitive soul that is you.  Because you, my sweet, are a delight.

A beautiful poem, bedazzled with wit, laughter, perception and faith.

And so with this birthday post I will (try to) get (mostly) out of the way and let you, and the verses you love, do the talking.  For as you reminded me the other day, in this crazy Ballad called “Life,” God made you a Protagonist who knows who you are, what you think, and how you feel.

Though she be but [eleven], she is fierce.
~ William Shakespeare

I’m just so thankful that this Mama gets to come along for the rhymes!

A Daughter
Caring Helper, Hug Giver, Latte Buddy, Baby Girl

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.
Care is heavy, therefore sleep you,
You are care, and care must keep you;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.

~ Thomas Dekker, “A Cradle Song”

Little miss, pretty miss,
Blessings light upon you!
If I had half a crown a day,
I’d spend it all upon you.

A new commandment I give to you,
that you love one another:
just as I have loved you,
you also are to love one another.

By this all people will know
that you are my disciples,

if you have love for one another.

~John 13:34-45

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
Rivers and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside.

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown.
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

~Robert Louis Stevenson, “The Swing”

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night
Sailed off in a wooden shoe–
Sailed on a river of crystal light,
Into a sea of dew.
“Where are you going, and what do you wish?”
The old moon asked of the three.
“We have come to fish for the herring fish
That live in this beautiful sea;
Nets of silver and gold have we!”
Said Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,
As they rocked in the wooden shoe,
And the wind that sped them all night long
Ruffled the waves of dew.
The little stars were the herring fish
That lived in that beautiful sea–
“Now cast your nets wherever you wish–
Never afeard are we!”
So cried the stars to the fishermen three:
Wynken,
Blynken,
And Nod…

Star high

‘Twixt the two
Wise men go;
Find the baby,
Grasp the star
Heirs of all things

A Friend
Compassionate, Caring, FUN

I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.

I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For who has sight so keen and strong,
That it can follow the flight of song?

Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend.

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, “The Arrow and the Song”

A Student
Smart, Passionate, Resilient, Hard Working
Whether learning at home, in a (masked) class, through a book, on the computer, or traveling for a field trip

He ate and drank the precious words,
His spirit grew robust;
He knew no more that he was poor,
Nor that his frame was dust.
He danced along the dingy days,
And this bequest of wing
Was but a book.  What liberty
A loosened spirit brings!

~ Emily Dickinson

There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away,
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry.
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll;
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human Soul.

~ Emily Dickinson

Little drops of water,
Little grains of sand,
Make the mighty ocean
And the pleasant land.

Thus the little minutes,
Humble though they be,
Make the mighty ages
Of eternity…

Fairy snow, fairy snow,

Draw a crazy picture,
Write a nutty poem,
Sing a mumble-grumble song,

Do a loony-goony dance
‘Cross the kitchen floor,

That ain’t been there before.

~Shel Silverstein, “Put Something In”

Let’s have one day for girls and boyses
When you can make the grandest noises.
Screech, scream, holler, and yell–
Buzz a buzzer, clang a bell,
Sneeze–hiccup–whistle–shout,
Laugh until your lungs wear out…

~ Shel Silverstein, “Noise Day”

Tenderheart
Loving, Sensitive, Loyal

It’s all I have to bring today,
This, and my heart beside,
This, and my heart, and all the fields,
And all the meadows wide.
Be sure you count, should I forget –
Some one the sum could tell –
This, and my heart, and all the bees
Which in the clover dwell.

Ask, and it will be given to you;
seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.

Hide and seek, says the Wind,
In the shade of the woods;
Hide and seek, says the Moon,
To the hazel buds;
Hide and seek, says the Cloud,
Star on to star;
Hide and seek, says the Wave,
At the harbour bar;
Hide and seek, say I,
To myself, and step
Out of the dream of Wake
Into the dream of Sleep.

~Walter de la Mare, “Hide and Seek”

The Moon was but a Chin of Gold
A Night or two ago –
And now she turns Her perfect Face
Upon the World below.

Her Forehead is of Amplest Blonde –
Her Cheek – a Beryl hewn –
Her Eye unto the Summer Dew
The likest I have known.

Her Lips of Amber never part –
But what must be the smile
Upon Her Friend she could confer
Were such Her Silver Will.

And what a privilege to be
But the remotest Star –
For Certainty She take Her Way
Beside Your Palace Door.

Her Bonnet is the Firmament –
The Universe – Her Shoe –
The Stars – the Trinkets at Her Belt –
Her Dimities – of Blue.

Boats sail on the rivers,
And ships sail on the seas;
But clouds that sail across the sky
Are prettier far than these.

There are bridges on the rivers,
As pretty as you please;
But the bow that bridges heaven,
And overtops the trees,
And builds a road from earth to sky,
Is prettier far than these.

~Christina Rossetti, “The Rainbow”

Happy Birthday,

Good night! Good night!
Far flies the light;

Making all bright,
Good night! Good night!

The Little Mister is NINE!

Little Mister!  My sweet and spunky boy!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

You are NINE!

And how we ADORE every bit of your loving, adventurous, hilarious self.

You are the smile on our lips and the mirth in our hearts.

What a year you have had, Dear One.

You have climbed mountains, rafted rapids, surfed waves, marched for justice, tackled new sports, worked diligently in school, and devoted your life to the Lord…

all while being a welcomer and friend to all those around you.

You are a Gift and a Treasure, Little Mister.

A Mighty Man of Courage with an incredible future ahead of you.

OH THE PLACES YOU WILL GO!!!

And we are BLESSED to get to be on this journey with you!

You, our NINE YEAR OLD Little Mister, are a…

Doting and Devoted Sibling

The sugary, spicy cream in the middle of our Littles Oreo.

The Wrestling to our daily WWE production.

Daddy’s Double and Mommy’s Munchkin

The best Helper and Running Buddy, all in one adorable, freckly-faced package.

Family Man

This Lil Charmer cares for his people with a heart as big as the world.  When you are in Elliott’s orbit, you are known and loved.

(And wildly entertained!)

Best Friend

He’ll tell you a joke, share his favorite hiking stick, give you the shirt off his own back (just beware that it’ll probably be a bit muddy).  The Little Mister is KIND and THOUGHTFUL and GENEROUS.  I can’t even imagine a more fabulous friend.

Young Man of Faith and Courage

The Little Mister took some big steps this year, as he grows into a young man.  He took his first communion in church, after taking a class with some of his pals.  He also joined our church family in marching for social and racial justice in our city and country.  We are so proud of his courage and budding maturity, and love watching how God is molding and shaping him.

Tender Heart for Furry Friends

Our family had to bid adieu to our precious Teddy this year, and it was particularly hard on our Little Mister.  He and Teddy were great buddies – the Little Mister faithfully walked Teddy, fed him, gave him treats, scratched his belly.  He did it all.  It was terribly hard to let our sweet pup go.  And we were not at all surprised when Elliott told us afterwards that he wanted to be a Veterinarian when he grew up (and a Nature Explorer).

Furry Pals have never known a better chum.

En fuego!  Full of Spark and Life!

This kid lives life big and bold.  Zero to Sixty.  Pedal to the metal.  All systems “GO!”

He holds nothing back!

(Big feelings included!)

Thrill Seeker

Risk Taker.  Stunt Devil.  Mama’s-Grey-Hair-Maker.

There’s no mountain too high, snake too scaly, or river too wide for the Little Mister to take on.

(And his Mama’s cookie jar of prayer requests never runs empty!)

Tree Hugger

Granola Eater, Happy Hiker, Mud Bather, Wildlife Wanderer.  Whatever you call him, that’s the Little Mister!

A Nature Lover through and through, with a curiosity for God’s creation that knows no bounds.  He can identify a tree, debate the characteristics of a slithering specimen, dissect an octopus, and forge across a rushing river, all without breaking a sweat!

(Just make sure to empty his pockets before you wash his laundry.)

Energetic Athlete

Running like a beast, scoring touchdowns, smacking tennis balls, and swinging like a Ninja…This gutsy Little Mister is on the GO (gross football mouth-guard included)!  He worked so hard this year, running laps around our neighborhood nearly every morning and taking occasional runs with Mama, trying to get into great shape for Running Club.  Football and tennis were two new sports he tried, and they were such fun!  He smoked the other football teams with his supersonic speed and was the top scorer on his team!

Super Student

Second grade was no match for this kiddo.  He gave his all this school year, even taking on the extra challenge of vision therapy to help his eyes become Superhero Strong.  Homeschooling with a trampoline and a zipline in your backyard, a wonderful neighbor who reads books to you, and a Daddy working from home who loves art and music, is pretty awesome…especially when you’re waiting patiently for drop-off classes at Deerstream to be back in person!

Conscientious Cub Scout

Though Cub Scouts had an abbreviated year, the Little Mister and his two sidekicks (Daddy and the Little Sir) made the best of every opportunity.  They learned about whittling, putting up a tent, fire safety, frisbee golf and rocket making, and the Little Mister won “Most Creative” for his car in the Pinewood Derby!

Court Jester

Wiggly, wacky…all of life is a joke and a lark!

(Well, it is until your Mean Mom makes you do some Math.)

Dapper Dude

The Little Mister is one good lookin’ guy who loves to dress sharp!

Be still my heart!

Dreamer

The Little Mister has an imagination as big as the sky.  He loves hearing stories, listening to music, writing tall tales, and drawing silly pictures and comics.  He’s a dreamer!  And we know his hopes and dreams will take him to exciting places.

Elliott Michael Wright, you are a Prince among (Little) Men.

We love you so much and wish you the

HAPPIEST 9th BIRTHDAY

ever!!!

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go…

OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights…

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

Last Day of School!

This schoolyear ~ 2020-2021 ~ was Wackadoodle!

But we did it!

We crushed it like the (slightly unhinged) Homeschool Champs that we are.

BOOM!

4th Grade?!?

KA-BLOOOOEY!

Hooray!

And HELLO Summer!!!
